Highest Station On The Front Range!
Thanks to Josh and Holly's persistence, the radio station went on air sometime in 1997 with a mix of junk electronics and a gift of a 1 watt amplifier from this guy named Radio Mike from Michigan. The "Mighty 1 Watt" was born. A j pole antennae was fabricated out of a stick of copper pipe. The studio was located in an extra room of the Glacier Gateway General Store and featured early DJ talents such as "The Love Doctor", Apache's "Party on Air", Becca's Kid's Show, Rap Roulette, The Damo Show, Nocturnatina, The Poetry Show and more..After a couple of years in this location , it was moved up to the Old Depot into "Studio D" where it remained until 2009 when we lost the space. One Christmas Eve (around 2000 or so) Radio Mike showed up out of the blue and said he was there to take the transmitter because he heard the radio station had been taken over and was not being used. After showing him the new studio and explaining how we had kept it alive with yearly benefits and Planet Mind support, Mike went to the trunk of his car and returned with a gift of a 10 watt transmitter saying that we were the most successful station he had ever helped create and the longest running. With many years of successful benefits, the station ran around the clock under the randomness of CHIP and the help of people like Jim, DJ Willy, Christina, Apache, David, Greg, Forest and Andy and others until we lost the space to broadcast. At that point the equipment had fallen in to disrepair and community support was waning. In the summer of 2011, locals met to discuss emergency preparedness and agreed that we should bring the radio station back to life to help keep our Community informed in many ways. With the timely donation of the "Nathan Kendrick Memorial Studio", we immediately had a new home. We now enter a whole new era of Way High Radio. Please help us with the history by letting us know what you can remember.
Holly (a founder) reflects on our humble beginning.
That summer I came back from the Michigan Women's Festival and had taken a class there called Pirate Radio. I remember thinking that Ward would be so perfect and a radio station could truly serve the town. Josh and I both worked at Dan's store, the Glacier Gateway, and collaborated. I remember Mikey Parker did the first auction. Raised over 2000 dollars. River really wanted the Jim Stone knife and sheath, but couldn't keep bidding, but kindly Kate Blomer gave it to him afterward. Howeird donated items from a recently passed elder's house, can't remember who, but still have the planter I bid on. I got the dinner at Marracco's before it was The Restaurant and got sick on wine and stuff and puked for what seemed like hours in their toilet. Poor Nurse Celeste. It seemed like the whole town showed for that auction. Where is that furry Josh?
