The Call to Action 2010
In response to the Fourmile Canyon Fire in 2010, the citizens of Ward met with different government agencies (including FEMA) to discuss how our community could be better prepared in the event of a similar emergency. After lengthy discussions revolving around the possible use of two way, ham, shortwave, reverse 911, phone trees, etc., someone in the meeting asked "What about the radio station, whatever happened to it?" A spark was born out of necessity, but it's only part of the picture. Aside from being a important communication resource in the event of an emergency, Way High Radio serves as a link for the Indian Peaks Mountain Community; A way to bring our Community together in a creative context, A way to share ideas, A way to share people's unique talents, As a Community Bulletin Board. Locally, the radio station will continue to be run under the guidelines of a low power fm (LPFM) community run station. And now with the advantage of streaming capabilities, we are able to reach alot more folks out there who want to hear us.
Way High Radio was started in 1997 to connect the Community of Ward, CO and beyond. It has been guided by a handful of committed individuals over the years. Through Community support from annual benefits, we have managed to stay on air except for about 2 years (2009 -2011) We were brought back to life, with the urging of our local FEMA director, to help aid in emergency services and also to expand our desire to connect Ward and the Indian Peaks Community. We are volunteer run, community supported and commercial free, NOBODY gets paid. All revenue (after expenses) is used to support other Town of Ward projects.
